Got Braces? 5 Crucial Steps to Help You Brush Like a BossJune 3, 2015
Who doesn’t want a dazzling white smile? They can take years off our appearance and can be a huge boost to our confidence level. While bleaching your teeth is usually an effective and safe method of making your pearly white shine, it also helps to avoid or take precautions when eating food that stain your teeth. Some healthy foods fall under this category as well.
Here are 7 healthy foods and drinks that can make your smile dimmer:
Black Coffee – Do you reach for a big cup of black coffee to help you get going in the morning? If you do, you might notice some staining on your teeth as black coffee is one of the worst offenders when it comes to staining your teeth. You can cut down the staining by putting in a splash of milk to help lighten it up, and you’ll get a boost of calcium and vitamin D from the milk as well!
Balsamic Vinegar – While balsamic vinegar is a great addition to any salad, it can definitely stain your teeth. Fortunately, lettuce has been shown to protect the teeth from stains because it forms a film that acts as a barrier against stain-forming foods and drinks. If nothing else, you can still use a lighter color of vinegar like rice vinegar, or you can opt for a little spritz of lemon juice.
Tea – Tea can be quite healthy, but because of its tannins that it possesses, it can wind up staining your teeth. Luckily, there are also some varieties that don’t stain your teeth as much. Instead of reaching for darker-colored teas like English Breakfast and Earl Gray, opt for green, white, and herbal teas.
Beets – These healthy vegetables can be quite potent in the staining department, especially when they’re in juice form. Remember to brush your teeth within an hour of consuming beets – that way, stains won’t have any time to form on your beautiful teeth!
Tomato Sauce – Whether it’s spaghetti, pizza, or anything in between, tomato-based sauces can definitely stain your teeth. That doesn’t mean you have to swear off the lasagna, though! Just eat an appetizer of spinach or broccoli. Just like lettuce, these vegetables will form a protective film over your teeth so that the tomato-based sauce won’t stand much of a chance of seeping into your teeth’s pores and staining them.
Blueberries – Hailed as one of nature’s super-foods, blueberries are packed with antioxidants. However, if you’ve ever handled blueberries before, you know that they can stain your hands, clothes, and teeth very easily with their dark blue skins. Take precautions by swishing your mouth with water after you’ve eaten these delicious and nutritious fruits to keep your smile dazzling.
Citrus Fruits – Just like tomatoes, citrus fruits like oranges work to erode the enamel, which could then expose the yellow-hued dentin, which is the tissue that hides underneath the enamel. Don’t avoid these nutrient-packed fruits! Just keep a glass of water to drink nearby.
It would be foolhardy to totally avoid these healthy foods and drinks. So how do you prevent your teeth from becoming stained? While some staining will probably occur, you can cut it down considerably by maintaining proper oral care (brushing at least twice a day and flossing every day), drinking water, and brushing your teeth within an hour of consuming these foods and drinks.
