Get Stellar Teeth in 2015 With These 5 Healthy Resolutions!

Can you believe that 2014 is almost over? Christmas is just about here, and soon we will be ringing in the New Year. We might even make some New Year’s resolutions about losing weight, getting enough sleep, and saving more money as well. Why not make one of your resolutions be improving your dental health?

There are several things you can do to help keep your teeth healthy and happy throughout 2015 and in years to come. Read about these 5 resolutions to help you have a brighter, healthier set of teeth next year!

Quit Smoking and Using Tobacco – If you’re a smoker, you should know that using tobacco in any form can harm your mouth in numerous ways and increases your risk for tooth discoloration, cavities, gum recession, gum disease, and cancer of the mouth, throat, and lungs. Smokers are also twice as likely to lose their teeth than non-smokers are. Once you quit smoking and using tobacco, though, the risk of losing your teeth decreases quite a bit in a short amount of time! It’s time to stub out your final cigarette and say no to smoking!

Say Yes to Fruits and Veggies – Eating well isn’t just important to your body – it’s also imperative to your dental health! Poor nutrition can affect your immune system and can make you much more susceptible to gum disease. Antioxidants, which are present in several fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes, improve your body’s ability to fight off bacteria and infection and will help guard your teeth and gum from disease. Also, crispy veggies like peppers, celery, and carrots can help clean plaque from your teeth (and freshen your breath!).

Brush and Floss Very Regularly – It isn’t enough to just brush your teeth for 15 seconds once a day and never floss! In order to maintain a healthy smile you can be proud of, you must brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day – every single day, no exceptions! Sure, it might sound like a chore if you’re not used to it, but once you start and maintain this habit, it becomes second nature! Keep plaque, bacteria, tooth decay, and gum disease at bay by always following this resolution, no matter what!

Put a Limit on Alcohol – You might know already that an excessive alcohol intake can negatively affect your overall health, but did you know that it can affect your oral health as well? According to the Academy of General Dentistry, those who smoke, eat poorly, and consume an excessive amount of alcohol also have increase gum recession. That doesn’t mean you don’t have to resist alcohol at all times! It is recommended that men have no more than 2 drinks a day and women have no more than 1 drink a day.

See Us for Regular Checkups – You can’t take care of your teeth by yourself. That’s why there are dentists! Be sure to see the professionals at Foley Dental Group one to two times a year for your regular checkups! We can help you prevent any dental health problems before they arise and correct issues before the get worse.

Make your resolutions mean something this year. Resolve to care for your teeth and your body! Don’t forget to request an appointment with Foley Dental Group at www.foleydentalgroup.com or at (618) 288-9670!
