Say hello to Dr. Michael Wong, our amazing pediatric dentist! He has been at Foley Dental Group for 7 months. Dr. Wong enjoys helping children from around the area establish and maintain good oral hygiene practices and making them smile!
Ever since he was young, Dr. Wong knew he wanted to work with his hands and solve problems. Growing up, he loved going to his pediatric dentist and really looked forward to his visits at the office. “His office was so cool and even had a Pac-Man table arcade system in the waiting room,” Dr. Wong said. “I wanted to bring that joy and excitement to my patients and also make dental visits for children as exciting and as easy as possible.”
Dr. Wong enjoys working with us at Foley Dental Group because of our commitment to overall health and our dedication to providing the most current treatment modalities to all of our patients. What he especially enjoys, though, is getting to work and interact with the children who come in to see us. “The best part of my job is being able to joke around with the children and watching their excitement after they complete their dental visits,” said Dr. Wong.
When does Dr. Wong think that a child should have his or her first check-up with a pediatric dentist? “By one year of age or within 6 months after the first tooth erupts,” he advises. “This is important to establish a dental home for the patient and to build a trusting relationship among the patient, parents, and doctor.”
Routine examinations for children are also very important! “There is a lot of misinformation out there today, and many parents do not know how to properly care for their infant’s or toddler’s teeth,” said Dr. Wong. “Many times, children have cavities that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Routine examinations allow the dentist to monitor the growth and development of the child’s dentition. Often, early intervention like expansion and extractions can prevent future orthodontic problems as well.”
Just like adults, children should see a dentist every 6 months – the only difference is that children should see a pediatric dentist. “The benefit of seeing a pediatric dentist over a regular dentist is that the pediatric dentist has received 2 extra years of education specifically on treating children,” Dr. Wong explained. “This means that they learn how to work with children of all ages and needs, along with learning how to monitor the development of the child and his or her dentition.
