If you’re flossing regularly – and we’re talking once a day here – then that’s great news! You should definitely keep up the habit if you want clean, healthy, and happy teeth. Here’s the bad news – you might be flossing wrong.
Flossing properly removes plaque and food particles in places where your toothbrush can’t easily reach, including under your gumline and in between your teeth. Left alone, plaque can build up and lead to tooth decay and gum disease. That’s where proper flossing techniques come in handy!
We’re going to teach you about the proper technique, which is called c-shaped flossing. Here’s how you do it:
*Get about 18” of floss and wrap each end around the middle fingers of your hands. This might sound like an awful lot of floss, but you’ll want to keep a clean piece of floss in place as you move from tooth to tooth.
*Using your index fingers and thumbs, rock it gently and get the floss in between your teeth.
*Curve the floss around the base of each tooth, forming a “c” shape with the floss. Then, gently rub up and down the side of the tooth. This will clean off the plaque! Do this on each side of all your teeth until you’re done.
*To remove the floss, just use the same back-and-forth motion to bring the floss up and away from your teeth. And bam! You’re done!
*As a reminder, make sure that you’re flossing gently. Never snap or force the floss – this can cut or bruise your delicate gum tissue!
