To Scrape or Not to Scrape?

tongue scraping

You might know someone who swears by tongue scraping. Maybe you’ve read about it in a magazine, or maybe you’ve never heard of it. A tongue scraper is typically a small, long plastic tool with a flat edge. It is used to help clean your tongue by placing at the back of the tongue and then pulling forward to the tip of the tongue while applying gentle pressure.

According to the American Dental Association, there is not much proof that it is better than brushing your teeth and tongue. However, it can help bad breath when used in conjunction with teeth and tongue brushing by removing odor-causing bacteria.

If you’re curious, you can certainly give it a try–just don’t use it to replace brushing and flossing. Remember, for the healthiest mouth, see your dentist every six months. For questions or to schedule an appointment, please call 618-288-9670 or visit
